Fixed Pins

Overview

This section will guide you through the process of setting your fixed pins with Precision Cut Archery.

Can't I just use my sight tape?

You might be thinking... can't I just line my pins up with the marks on my tape?

Actually, usually not. For the vast majority of us, our pins will be slightly more spaced out than our tapes.

It comes down to this:

Do you center your sight housing in your peep? Or, do you center each pin individually?

The marks on your sight tape relate to the angle formed between your peep and your sight’s vertical movement. When you center your housing and aim with your pins, the same angle is relative to your eye. The radius is longer, meaning the gap in the pins has to be more to achieve the same angle.

Sounds complicated? Not to worry. We’ll ask you a couple simple questions and provide you with the EXACT pin gaps for your setup.

Prerequisites

Before setting your fixed pins, you'll need to have completed the following:

Setting Your Fixed Pins

Start by navigating to the Fixed Pins page within the application.

You can modify the Active Setup at the top of the page.

Configuring the Pins

Density Altitude

This is the density altitude the fixed pins will be configured for. This is useful if traveling and you'd like to make a tape for the destination's density altitude.

Read more about density altitude here.

Note

We generally don't worry about changing our fixed pins for density altitude, as usually pins are configured for reasonably close ranges. If you have fixed pins out to, say, 80 or 90 yards, it might be worth considering the impact of air density on your fixed pins when traveling.

Peep Configuration

Make your selection here based on how you align your sight while aiming.

Peep-to-Eye Measurement

If you center your housing in your peep, you'll need someone to help you measure the distance between your peep sight and your eye.

Pin Configurations

Here, you can set the number of pins and the ranges you'd like the pins set for. Here's an example 5-pin setup from 20-60 yards.

Setting the Pins

Once you have this configured how you like you have a couple of options:

1) Use a caliper to measure the pin gaps and set them yourself

2) Print out a to-scale printout that you can hold up to your pins

Tip

We recommend sighting in your bottom pin first, and then setting the pins above it via this method. This allows for as precise of a zero as possible.

Tip

If your sight has pins that cannot be adjusted, and you're trying to set the indicators on your tape to their proper locations, you can guess and check the yardages until you find the proper gap. For example, let's say the gap between your two fibers is 0.25". If your top pin is set to 20, your bottom pin will be about 37 yards.
